Case Study for Student Teaching
Located above, is a link to my case study I completed during student teaching. This case study was completed over a whole class. My case study focuses on shared reading and word work. During my shared reading and word work unit, students were paired up with another student to practice reading a story that was read the previous day as a group in shared reading time. This gave struggling readers the chance to practice stories. I paired students with more advanced students. Students had the option to read the story together or one student reads a page and the next student reads the next page. Students completed activities that went along with the stories that were read in this unit and activities involved word work (phonics/ phonemic awareness/phonological awareness). Some of the activities included sequencing stories, word work worksheets, circling high frequency words, highlighting words that have certain inflected endings such as –s or –ing endings, underlining words in a story that have short (a,e,I,o,u vowels) answering questions during and after the story and even brainstorming stories that sound similar to the story that is being read. I included formative and summative assessments through the unit as well to check for student understanding. At the beginning of the unit I gave a reading/phonics pre- test and at the end of the unit I will give a post-test. The activities were adjusted for both higher and lower level learners. My results showed that students were performing higher on the pre-test than the post test. This was because the pre-test was easier than the post-test was. |
Boys and Reading
Located above, is a link to my senior research paper. The topic I chose to write my senior research paper on was boys and reading. In this paper I compared kindergarten boys and first grade boys. My research paper focused on these questions: Do boys in the early education classes of kindergarten and first grade find subject matter to read that they enjoy as much as their female counterparts? Do these young boys like to read and are as confident in reading as their female peers? Do the kindergarten and first grade teachers recognize a difference in reading skills between boys and girls in their classrooms and, if so, what ideas should teachers use to increase interest and motivation in male students? |
Case Study for Diagnosis and Evaluation of Reading
Located above, is a link to my case study I completed while in Diagnosis and Evaluation of Reading. This case study was completed over an individual student. In this case study I had my student complete writing samples and I then analyzed the writing. I also completed an IRI on my student. From the writing analysis and IRI, I then was able to create a lesson plan over what my student needed help with the most. My student needed help with sight words. I began by giving her a sight word pre-test which included 150 sight words. My student missed 48/150 sight words. This showed my student got 68% of the words correct. My lessons included playing sight word bingo, using play dough to spell out sight words, playing a board game to review sight words, reading a story and having my student find sight words in the story, and writing a story on any topic my student wanted to write about. In the story my student had to use some of her sight words. At the end of the lessons I completed a post-test. My student was given the same sight word test. This time my students missed 5/150 sight words. This showed my student got 96% of the words correct and that there was significant progress made between the pre-test and post test. |
